The general use setup does get slower with time due to Windows crap bloating over time, but the others are running like new ones. All at one screen and with one mouse/ keyboard/ printer. Personally I got separate machine setups for CAD/CAM, programming, business, and general use. I guess the value of that depends on to which degree you use Mac programs. So for me the benefit seems to be that for a bit more money you can buy a setup which can run Mac program as well. That said, if you are going to boot into Windows anyway (to run Solidworks and CAM) you will still have all the Windows issues you mention whatever machine you buy. If the Mac is crapless I agree that it is a major boon, but I'm quite sure Mac got its share of viruses and trojans.

Otherwise, I would have no idea why Bootcamp would harm a computer or cause you to lose your wife's pictures, but I would always do a full and complete backup before installing anything like that. I have also heard VM ware has a good alternative to parallels, but I haven't tried either Parallels 3.0 apparently supports graphics acceleration, so that is positive. Keep in mind that parallels runs both OS's simultaneously, so you will be eating up a lot of resources. In Rhino anyway, you can usually find a setting that will work for ATI cards, though not always optimally. They have ATI cards, so they're likely to have some artifacts. I will be testing Rhino 4 on them in a couple of days. Here we are in the process of replacing all the PC's in our lab (40) with 24' iMacs.
